From RustonAfterDark.com: An Interview with Jamison King

For the past year, I’ve been running a website for the Ruston, La night life with mediocre success.  It seems it’s pretty hard to run a site about a city you no longer live in.  But, since I wrote a bunch of kick ass articles and got it published in a few trades and newspapers, I’m going to save the articles I wrote for it here for posterity.

Downtown Ruston was unusually busy Friday night. I’d made the trip over to meet with Jamison at Sundown, but it just wasn’t going to happen – the place was packed. “I didn’t know it had gotten this big.” he said. It was First Friday in Ruston and he was right…it wasn’t the small event it used to be. We stood outside listening to the music for a while before we finally settled on the Dawg House to do the interview.

“Wish they’d start having bands play here again, I’ve never played here.” Jamison hadn’t been playing any shows at all lately. It had been a busy summer for him: summer school, work, and getting married. Jamison and his fiancé, Ashley, spent a long weekend on the beach in Destin having fun and saying their “I do’s”. With all that going on, it’s amazing he even had any new material to show me.

“I got a CD for you with a few songs on it. Two of them I’ve been playing for a while, and one that I wrote this week. I just haven’t been doing any music at all lately; hardly even been playing guitar.” We ordered a few beers and some fried pickles.

So being married and being a musician is a tough combination?

It’s not that, just busy. I’ve had to take this night class and I’m working nights at Chilis…just doesn’t give me a lot of time to play. Ashley’s great about it though. At first, I think she really considered it a hobby, but it’s something I’m really passionate about, and she’s really understanding about that. I think she’s more worried about me playing in bars…and the girls.

You’ve got groupies?

[laughs] No, not at all.

So you’re starting to get back into playing music now?

A bit. Trying to get a band going with my brothers, Jeremy and Jared. I think if I do another album, it’ll be with them. I think we’ll get into a more bluesy sound when we do.

Well what kind of music do you play now?

I’m a little more mellow…slower I guess. Especially for what people play around here. It’ll be nice playing with Jeremy and Jerrod. It’ll have a more upbeat and driving sound. I think it’ll do better. We start in about a month.

So tell me about these tracks you brought.

Well, the first one is called, “Time to Make Up Your Mind.” I actually just finished it up today. It’s really a song about myself, I guess. About not being sedentary and sitting in one place. For me, it’s about getting off my ass and playing music.

The other two are songs that I’ve played at a few other shows. “When I Pass You By,” is mainly about escaping and getting out. Drifting out, you know? Drift on down to New Orleans, like the song says. I love it down there, it’s one of my favorite places.

Look My Way” was written in like ten minutes one night. I was at a friends house party and just wrote it. Just a little song about seeing a girl and all the things you wish you would have said or done.

Do you have any shows coming up?

Yeah, the first one in a while. I’m playing at Ponchatoulas this Saturday, the 10th. I’m excited about it. I like the crowd there. It’s a little more slow and I think my stuff goes over well there. There are a few other things in the works right now. We’ll see what happens.
